ARTIST SPOTLIGHTS & THINGS OF GENERAL IMPORTANCE
Heavy Witch Doom outfitters Frayle have punched their way into a scene thick with bushy beards, bong-ripped bellies, and dude-guys sporting their eldest SLEEP shirts with a refreshing refinement of high art gothic fashion and sleek stage atmosphere. What doesn’t change is the gnarling roaring amps fueled with fuzz and heave. Is Frayle better than the rest of this playing field? No, but they are definitely not afraid to be who they want to be and still participate in the sonic halls of the heavy underground.
They are their own gods. We are all our own gods. And that is what Frayle want you to take with them when you experience their sound. Vocalist Gwyn Strang stands softly yet firmly with a wall of riff and pounding drums. It’s quite heavy yet fragile at the same time, all the while, aptly Frayle.
The band is new but has been getting to work quickly. Originating in 2017, they published their first recording in spring of 2018. “The White Witch”, a 4-song EP that was self-released but later picked up with Laybare Recordings and released on vinyl later that year. Their latest release “1692” came out earlier this year under Aqualamb Records. This first full-length is what their earliest fans have been seeking.
We caught up with Frayle during these chaotic times to find out what they’ve been up to and were not disappointed with the laundry list of items. Frayle is currently working on their next album and have a rough outline of about 10 songs. They have no set release date as they’re planning to tour the material and so they’re staying fluid with deadlines. Frayle does have some dates for European events in late 2021, with the expectation that they may need to be pushed back. That is not stopping them from writing, filming, and just powering out all of their ideas in the meantime. They just finished filming a very ambitious live project to release around Christmas as part of a St. Vitus event.
Main writer and guitarist Sean Bilovecky tells us, “We are really excited about the steps we have taken since our first release. We are growing our audience, as well as our breadth of songwriting with each release and we are excited to unleash more and more new music to expand on what we can do as well as push the envelope of what is expected.”
